Inspired by nearly a decade of serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness throughout the Blackstone Valley, the beautifully illustrated picture book follows Hope, a gentle bear who unexpectedly loses his home. Along the way, Hope discovers that while difficult times can happen to anyone, simple acts of kindness can change a person's life.
"I wanted to create a book that helps children understand that people experiencing homelessness aren't so different from us," said Reichert. "Children naturally want to help. My hope is that this story encourages empathy instead of fear and opens the door for meaningful conversations between parents, grandparents, teachers, and children."
Since founding the Blackstone Valley Emergency Shelter in 2017, Reichert has helped build one of the region's most comprehensive community responses to homelessness. Today, BVES works with eight local police departments through its Police Partnership Program, operates seasonal emergency shelter services, provides homelessness navigation, distributes Hope Bags, and is expanding into transitional housing through its Hope Housing initiative.
Hope the Bear Finds Kindness reflects many of the real-life experiences Reichert has witnessed while serving neighbors in crisis. Rather than focusing on fear or sadness, the story emphasizes compassion, generosity, and the idea that everyone deserves kindness.
The book is intended for children ages 4–8 and can be used by families, elementary schools, libraries, churches, and community organizations as a resource for discussing empathy, service, and caring for others.
Proceeds from the book help support the mission of Blackstone Valley Emergency Shelter, allowing the organization to continue providing hope and practical assistance to individuals and families facing homelessness.
We hope this book will inspire readers of all ages to recognize that even the smallest act of kindness can make someone feel seen, valued, and loved.
