All of the single adult shelter programs are run though the Common Ground Resource Center (CGRC) and is run by an interdisciplinary team who evaluates all referrals for proper placement. For the family shelters, individuals must first apply for EA/Emergency Family Shelter through the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (formerly DHCD) and be determined eligible, then referred to SMOC.

PET FRIENDLY! This shelter accepts single women, women with children (boys under 13) and pets. HAVING A PET IS A REQUIREMENT TO STAY. The shelter is first come first serve, a wait list is not maintained, and length of stay is open ended. Guests must be clean & sober. Upon entry guests are drug tested, but a CORI is not required. If the drug test shows marijuana guests can stay, but will be retested in 30 days. Upon entry guests must get a job or have benefits that can cover $500/month and $40/week in groceries. Supportives services including case management and housing searches are NOT provided. The shelter has eight bedrooms and pets stay in the room with the guest/family. Veterinary care IS covered including spay/neutering.

Temporary pop-up warming shelter. Open for cold weather only 20 degrees or below from 9:30pm-7am. Also subject to volunteer availability. It is best to call ahead as the shelter is not on the first floor and knocking on the door cannot be heard. Single male/female beds (approx 5 each), as well as family rooms (2) are available. Doors open at 9:30p & close at 10p except for police transports which are accepted up until midnight (volunteers leave at midnight if there are no guests). Rarely full to capacity. The Millbury Senior Center works on behalf of the older
residents of the town to make sure that adequate services
and activities are available. Programs are designed to
improve and enrich the quality of life for the elderly. They
include, but are not limited to, Information/Referral, Nutrition
Counseling, Outreach, Transportation, Health Clinics,
Advocacy, and numerous Social Activities. Outreach worker,
Julie Fitzgerald can also assist with applying for SNAP
benefits.
Lunch is offered daily Monday - Friday at 12:00 pm. Every
Friday is special treat day. Reservations must be made 48
hours in advance. Suggested donation is $2.50.
Shopping Transportation is offered to local venues including
the Shoppes at Blackstone Valley, the Auburn Mall, Price
Chopper, Goretti's and many more. Reservations must be
made 48 hours in advance.

The average shelter stay is 30 days, and it is closed between the hours of 9am-3pm with the expectation that those staying there will be out trying to find employment, volunteer or getting connected to other services. When applying for SNAP benefits, an address for the EBT card and communications to be sent is needed. If someone is homeless and does not have any address they can use (friend/family etc), it is best to go into the DTA office for assistance. DTA’s local office lobby is open for services, including new self-service options. You can use the phones, copiers, or kiosks to apply for benefits or manage your case. DTA staff and interpreters are available to assist you.
If you need an EBT card, you can request one be sent to you via mail on the DTA Connect mobile app, DTAConnect.com or using the automated prompts on the DTA Assistance Line (877-382-2363). Most cards are delivered within 3-5 days. You can also visit one of the local offices to receive an EBT card if you need one more quickly. If you cannot visit an office, talk to our staff about other options. DTA offers a program called Transitional Assistance for Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC). TAFDC provides cash assistance to families who have at least one dependent child under the age of 18 or 19. TAFDC is also open to pregnant women who are in the last 120 days of their pregnancy with their first child. In addition to providing cash assistance, TAFDC participants can also receive help with child care, transportation, and referrals for other social services, like mental health or substance abuse programs. There are income guidelines and assistance is provided for a limited duration. Call the DTA office for assistance. *Transportation services may also be available.

Temporary shelter for men and women. Usually have between 4-6 guests. Demand is especially high and stay durations are longer than usual given the current housing situation. Two meals are provided per day, and laundry is offered twice per week. Can call for availability on any given day. No formal application process. It is preferred to call and tell them about a person whom they might help. They like to know if they have an active addiction or addiction history, if they are at risk of taking their life, and if their need is something that can be met in a relatively short time. They also like to know if they have any professional or personal support. No waiting list is kept. When they have an open bed, they will take the next appropriate person.

The Abby’s House shelter is a dry shelter that provides temporary shelter (up to 30 days) to women with or without children (up to age 12yrs old). LUK provides services to young adults 16-24 yrs old who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. LUK is not an emergency shelter, but can assist with finding shelter as part of the Transition to Independent Living program. Choices is a support for Worcester County teens struggling with substance use challenges. The services are of no cost to families.

Choices offers wrap around services including clinical support, skill building and healthy sober activities for teens who have experienced challenges with substance use and other comorbidity's such as anxiety and depression. The peer mentors and recovery navigators offer adolescents critical support during the non scheduled hours after school when boredom and peer pressure can lead to poor decision making and substance use. Choices offer services such as medication management, 1 on 1 and group therapy, art and music therapy, and a full recreation center for age-appropriate activities, groups, concerts and movie nights.

The staff includes doctorate level clinicians and physicians, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LADC 1 & 2) and licensed social workers.
